1. Mr. Dierker, why did you also specialize in the training of company fire protection assistants?Listenelement 1I can only look at it from the point of view of the fire protection practitioner. In many companies there is still too little training and practice. It is clear to me that there are other priorities in day-to-day business. However, I know from my own experience how great the horror often is when the worst comes to the worst and one is faced with major human and economic problems. Therefore, one should not lose sight of hazard prevention and implement it in the operational processes. The training of company fire protection assistants is extremely important for the protection of the people who work in a company. However, the activity of well-trained fire protection assistants is also very important for the companies themselves. If the first fire-fighting measures are successfully carried out between the time the fire alarm is issued and the arrival of the fire brigade, fire damage and economic losses are significantly reduced.

2. Property damage is covered by insurance?Listenelement 2Usually yes, but not everything can be covered by insurance. If, for example, customers are lost because you couldn't deliver due to a fire-related loss of production, you won't get them back so quickly.
-
3. Are there legal requirements for the training of fire protection assistants?Listenelement 3Yeah, sure. There are legal regulations, for example, in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, but also in various professional association specifications. In my seminars, however, I offer much more than what is required, for example, in BG I 560 - occupational safety through preventive fire protection. The fire protection assistants I train can also support the managers responsible for fire protection in everyday life with the specialist knowledge they have acquired.
-
4. How is the training for fire protection assistants structured?Listenelement 4The training for fire protection assistants initially includes an introduction to the topic of fire protection. This introduction deals with topics such as the basics of fire theory, extinguishing theory, dangers at fire sites and tactically correct procedures for self-help workers. This is followed by the basics of preventive structural, technical and organizational fire protection.
-
5. So it is purely theoretical content that you teach? No. The conclusion is usually a practical exercise with fire extinguishers. Depending on the local conditions, this exercise can also be carried out "hot", i.e. with a gas-powered exercise device.
-
6. Why are retirement homes so important to you? This has a personal background. My first assignment was in a retirement home in Bremen that had just burned down. There I saw on the floor the outlines of the people who had died there from smoke gas. But of course it also has a technical background. In the case of fire incidents in homes of any kind, many people are usually endangered. This always poses great challenges for the fire brigades. If firefighting and human rescue have to run in parallel, a large number of personnel is required. Well-trained employees in fire protection can be of enormous support.
-
7. Isn't it enough if companies have fire alarm systems that are connected to the responsible fire brigade control center?A very clear no. Fire protection should be understood in three parts: preventive structural fire protection, plant fire protection and organizational fire protection. If one of these three pillars is missing, for example good training and organization (e.g. in fire protection regulations according to DIN 14096 in parts A to C), there is always the risk of a disaster in the event of an emergency. Comprehensive fire protection must cover all areas.
-
8. Is participation in fire safety training compulsory for employees?Yes, no employee of a company can avoid the obligation to take part in training measures on occupational safety ordered by the company.
-
9. What are your experiences? Are the employees motivated or do you first have to create awareness of the dangers? At our seminars, I keep finding that the employees in the company are very open to the topic of fire protection. Awareness of the dangers of fire certainly quickly fades into the background in everyday life. I think this is also normal. When driving a car, who thinks about the possibility of a fatal accident every day? That's not possible. But, after a short introductory phase, participation and interest increase very quickly. This decreases somewhat when “digging through” legal bases. But at the latest when the flame of the training device is burning and the fire extinguishers are ready for use, everyone is highly motivated again.

10. Where do you still see weaknesses in fire protection in companies?I can only look at it from the point of view of the fire protection practitioner.
